“I feel it is important to run for Shine in the Auckland Marathon for me personally, as it is my way of giving back after the help and support I received from Shine in my time of need. It raises awareness about domestic violence. Being able to run for Shine motivates me to train harder because not only does it give me that goal to work towards and a sense of personal achievement, it’s the fact that I could be changing someone’s life. Knowing that the money I’ve raised will contribute to vulnerable families getting out of violent homes. I think others should run for Team Shine as domestic violence is so prevalent in New Zealand, and looking at the bigger picture, although running can be hard and takes a lot of training, it is a walk in the park compared to what people and families experiencing domestic violence have to go through.” Crystal running Half Marathon (21km)

“I made the plunge and signed up to walk the half marathon with Team Shine, setting my target at $1,000 for extra motivation. I know by doing the Auckland Marathon, I am also changing lives. Working at Shine and speaking to our clients, I know the devastation domestic violence is causing families everyday and the difference our front line staff are making by getting victims safe and ensuring they stay safe. I want to us to help even more families.

“It has been a very long time since I have done any serious exercise, but the Auckland Marathon is one of the very few opportunities we currently have to walk over the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Signing up for Team Shine and putting it out to all my friends and family now ensures that there is no backing out and has me sticking to my training schedule. I have a lot of work to do between now and 20th October, but I am looking forward to reaching my target and reaching the finish line.” Carol walking Half Marathon (21km)

“I feel good that I know if something happens, I can go to my friend’s house. I talk to mum more about what might happen if dad comes to our house.” 11-year-old KIDshine client
