Who can get help from Shine’s Helpline?

If you are feeling trapped, if you’re being controlled, or physically or emotionally abused by a partner, ex-partner, family member, or someone close to you, we want you to have access to support, information, and advocacy through our Helpline.

You can also get support, information and advice from our Helpline if you’re worried about a friend, family member, child, neighbour, workmate, or anyone who might be experiencing domestic abuse.

We are here to support you whether you are a man or a woman, straight, transgender, young or old, no matter your ethnicity, culture, or personal situation.

Anyone who is worried about using harmful behaviour to a partner, family member, or someone close to them can also ring our Helpline to get support, information and referrals.

If you are Deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired, you can ring Shine’s free national Helpline (0508-744-633) using the NZ Relay service. Helpline operators are trained to take calls from the NZ Relay service.

Our Helpline has access to an interpreting service, so if you have limited English, please let the Helpline worker know what language you speak when you ring and we’ll try to access an interpreter for you.

Why would I call Shine’s Helpline?

You can speak confidentially to our helpful and professional staff, who can:

  • Just listen if that’s what you need, provide emotional support without judgment.
  • Help you understand what’s going on in your relationship, whether it is abuse, and how much danger you are in.
  • Give you information, for example about how Protection Orders or Police Safety Orders work, what will happen if your partner has been arrested, etc.
  • Help you understand and sort through your options, and come up with the best plan for becoming safer that honours your dignity, values, beliefs and choices.
  • Talk about what’s happening with your children, how they’re being affected, and how you can best help them to stay safe, be well and cope.
  • If you need advocacy with Police or Oranga Tamariki or another organisation to access services or essentials such as housing and benefits, we will do what we can to advocate on your behalf and/or we will refer you to other services such as Shine’s Advocate Team if you’re in Auckland Central or North Shore, or your local women’s refuge or other domestic violence specialist service elsewhere.
  • We may suggest or offer a referral for you to other people or organisations, such as District Court Victim Advisors, adult or child safety programmes, etc.
  • Give you advice on what to do if you are worried about someone else’s safety.
  • If you’re experiencing domestic  violence or concerned about someone you know or worried about your own harmful behaviour, call Shine’s Helpline on 0508-744-633 now. You can call as many times as you need, for as long as you need to.
