Volunteers

Our volunteers run the After Hours Callout Service at Shine. A partnership with Auckland City Police and the Auckland District Health Board ensures that we are contacted every time an arrest is made for domestic violence, or a victim of domestic violence is identified in the hospital. An After Hours Callout Advocate responds immediately and visits the victim to offer immediate support, risk assessment and safety planning.

All volunteers receive comprehensive training in addition to ongoing training and peer supervision. Volunteers get a chance to make a real difference in the lives of people affected by domestic violence.

"Volunteering for Shine, I expected to be able to make some small contribution towards women's welfare, but I didn't foresee the additional payback of meeting a whole new group of passionate, articulate and committed fellow volunteers who are a joy to know."

What makes a great volunteer?

We welcome adult women from all cultures, communities and age groups.

Our volunteers need to:

  • Be able to relate to a wide range of people
  • Be committed to improving the rights of women and children
  • Be committed to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi
  • Be able to undertake our 36 hour initial training
  • Be able to commit to regular shifts for at least a year following completion of training
  • Have a drivers licence and access to a reliable car – petrol costs are reimbursed.

Pictured here are some of our amazing after hours Callout Volunteers who came to the annual Shine Volunteer Christmas party in December 2011.  This year our volunteers received gifts from Shine which were kindly donated by companies that include Hansell's Food Group, Sanitarium, Whittaker's Chocolate, Pomegranite, and Fairfax Magazines.

NZ volunteer of the year 2009

In June 2009, Bridgit Bretherton-Jones, afterhours Shine volunteer of 5 years, was awarded the title of Volunteer of the Year 2009 by the Hon. Tariana Turia who said:

"In what might otherwise seem a soul-destroying environment, Bridgit has risen above the crisis of violent assaults, to support both clients and colleagues alike. She is cheerful and compassionate despite call outs in the early morning frost."

"Bridgit epitomises the younger volunteers that we are celebrating this Volunteer Awareness Week. She is frequently available, even at short notice, and she is known by all as an exceptional, all round young woman. This work can only be described as having the nature of an emergency crisis – but from all accounts Bridgit responds to all situations with a characteristic warmth and impressive commitment."
