Domestic Abuse Training Programmes & Seminars
Shine continues to deliver training programmes to a wide range of audiences, accommodating diverse and specific requests relating to the topic of domestic abuse. Our trainers are selected for having a combination of training/speaking skills as well as in-depth knowledge about domestic abuse.
Every year, Shine staff deliver training to thousands of people who work for a range of government, not-for-profit, and corporate organizations. Training sessions range from one hour general awareness sessions to intensive one or two day trainings. Most of our one-day or longer training sessions teach professionals the theory and practical skills to help them recognise the signs of domestic abuse, respond safely and appropriately, and refer to specialist organizations that can provide needed support and advocacy. Our trainers are selected for having a combination of training/speaking skills as well as in-depth knowledge about domestic abuse.

Unitec Department of Social Practice
In 2006, Shine was invited by Unitec’s Department of Social Practice to create a specialist domestic violence paper as part of their Bachelor’s degree programme. The first of these was taught in July 2007. Shine staff teach this paper every year under our agreement with Unitec. Students completing the paper continue to give it very good feedback. A number of students who completed the paper have been hired to work for the Shine Helpline in recent years. For many years, we have also taught specific sessions on domestic abuse within various core papers of the Bachelor of Social Practice programme, which we continue to do.
District Health Boards' Family Violence Intervention Programme
The Ministry of Health requires all 21 District Health Boards to introduce and maintain routine screening of female patients for partner violence, as well as indicator-based screening of all other patients for partner violence or child abuse. This national initiative is called the Family Violence Intervention Programme, commonly known within hospitals as FVIP. The idea is that by intervening early and providing timely support services to survivors and their children, the healthcare system can potentially avoid some of the long term health consequences and therefore also significant costs.
Shine is contracted by the Ministry of Health to support staff employed by District Health Boards around the country who deliver FVIP training to their staff. We also offer support to District Health Boards that opt to use their own internally developed training packages. Shine developed the standard Ministry of Health FVIP training package and Trainer's Manual. The Shine Health Trainer observes training being delivered, then offers support and feedback to ensure consistency of trainings at a national level.
Shine also helps to develop and deliver FVIP training to staff within the Auckland District Health Board and staff of some of Auckland primary healthcare services.

New Zealand College of Midwives.
Because they often visit women in their homes and develop a very close relationship with these women, midwives are in a very good position to support women who are experiencing domestic violence. For a number of years, Shine has been delivering one-day training sessions throughout the country for the NZ College of Midwives. This training provides credit for midwives towards their Annual Practising Certificate.
Catholic Family and Community Services
Shine delivers training to Catholic parishes and services throughout the Auckland region, under an agreement with Catholic Family and Community Services. Feedback has been positive, reinforcing Shine’s commitment to promote dialogue about family violence within religious and many other segments of the community through our training programmes.
Child, Youth and Family Services
In 2009-2010, the Shine Training Team was presented with the challenge of developing and delivering family violence training specifically suited to the needs of Child, Youth and Family (CYF) frontline social workers. At the request of CYF Northern Region, Shine developed a two-day family violence training programme for CYF social workers. This training was delivered to social workers at all 16 CYF offices of the CYF northern region (all Districts in Auckland and northwards).
Much time and care went into the development of this training package to ensure that it ‘fit’ with the mandate of statutory social workers, who must ensure the safety of children at risk of abuse. In the last few years, CYF has developed a whole range of new practice tools for their social workers. The Shine training used a number of case studies and exercises that utilized the new CYF practice tools so that our training could easily be incorporated into CYF daily practice. In developing the training package, we worked closely with senior CYF frontline staff, e.g. practice leaders, to ensure our training would be of maximum use to frontline CYF staff. The content of our two day workshop equipped workers with more knowledge and skills in their work with families where children are at risk due to witnessing and experiencing violence.
“The Northern Region of Child,Youth and Family have benefitted from domestic violence training from Shine at every site over the last eighteen months. While some staff found the training reinforced their prior learning, others found the training invaluable in terms of increasing their skills and knowledge when working with victims of domestic violence. The training was developed specifically for the social work staff and was well targeted with some healthy discussion along the way. Excellent feedback re the trainers and their delivery was received from a number of sites and I am assured that staff have incorporated their learning into practice. The training has reinforced staff knowledge in this area of work and has improved safety for victims, and in particular the children we work with.”
Sharon Thom, Child, Youth and Family Operations Manager, Northern Region
Migrant and Refugee Community
Over the years, we have delivered a number of large workshops to asylum seekers and members of the migrant and refugee community in the Auckland region. In 2010, Shine worked with Auckland Regional Migrant Services to develop a workshop specific to migrant and refugee women. Shine also delivered training for the Asian Network Forum which had requested training specific to the Asian community.
Colleges
Shine has delivered many workshops to colleges in the Auckland region (Baradene, Carmel, Kelston Girls Grammar, Albany Senior High School), targeting female students to help them learn about healthy relationships and what to do if they are abused. These workshops have ranged from presentations to single classrooms to presentations to full assemblies of hundreds of female students.
