The Shine Story

Shine is New Zealand's largest single domestic abuse organisation registered as a charity with the Charities Commission.

Shine’s legal name as a registered charity is Safer Homes in New Zealand Everyday Incorporated, and our registered charity number is CC10839.

“The name of our organisation is hopeful, optimistic and positive, reflecting our organisational values, objectives and services. It conveys the attitude of the people who work in this organisation and what we achieve. These are tough times and family violence is a grim issue – on both counts, this country needs to feel that a light is shining on a terrible problem and that some brightness is coming.”

Jane Drumm, Executive Director of Shine

In 2011, Shine is celebrating 20 years of doing what works to stop domestic abuse. Shine was founded in 1990 and has grown over the years to become a well known national organisation which provides a range of services.

In July 2009, Preventing Violence in the Home and Safer Families Foundation formally united to become a stronger organisation dedicated to eliminating domestic abuse in New Zealand. Both organisations had a long history of developing innovative ways to respond effectively to domestic violence in New Zealand. After amalgamating, we became a larger national organization, in a better position to provide essential services to New Zealanders in need.

On 30 September 2011, the new Shine with Family Works partnership was announced.  In this significant new partnership, Shine and Family Works Northern are undertaking to work together to make a bigger difference in reducing domestic abuse in families. Our two agencies have primarily complementary services which together will offer a continuum of services from crisis intervention to medium-term follow up with families. We believe that together Shine with Family Works can achieve more to increase the safety of a significant proportion of families experiencing abuse.

Shine provides a variety of services for the community to achieve our mission of ‘Doing what works to stop domestic abuse.’
