Shine Heroes

We are so grateful to the many people who, over the years, have used their own skills, resources, networks, and creative ideas to raise funds for Shine. Some of these Heroes are listed below.

Shine is so grateful for the huge amount of support we receive from corporate supporters and sponsors.  The primary sponsors of major Shine fundraising events or services and those which have an ongoing commitment to supporting Shine are listed on our corporate sponsorship page.  Many other businesses have made donations as part of Shine fundraising events.  These businesses are mentioned in the past event pages or on current events pages listed under the Shine Foundation.

You too can be a Shine Hero!

A HUGE THANK-YOU to our Shine Heroes...

Takapuna Grammar students fundraise for Shine

On their own initiative, Stana Low, Yvonne Kong, Maddy Farrell, Gemma Cundy, and Rachel Durrant, from Takapuna Grammar School's legal studies class, raised $290 for Shine. Thanks to all of you for choosing to help Shine!

Sue Whyte and Intimo

In October 2011, Intimo founder Sue Whyte passed away, and the world lost a true champion of women. Sue Whyte’s commitment to the issue of domestic violence culminated with her requesting that donations be made to Intimo Aware’s domestic violence partners as a memorial to her. As a result, Shine received a donation of $6,500 in November 2011. New Zealand Intimo Consultants gave an additional $1,100 to Shine. The total donation of $7,600 from Intimo made in memory of Sue Whyte, is supporting Shine’s national Helpline.

Intimo’s community program is dedicated to raising the awareness and understanding of subjects relevant to women, and focusses on three key areas, one of which is domestic violence. In November every year, Intimo runs a "White Bra" month where $1 from every white bra they sell is donated to their community partners – Shine is their community partner in New Zealand. Shine has received a significant annual donation from this wonderful initiative for many years now.

Oceanbridge Shipping, New Zealand's premier freight company, selected Shine's KIDshine programme as one of the two charity recipients of its annual Golf Day fundraiser, attended by Oceanbridge customers, suppliers and partners. Shine representatives spoke briefly at the event on February 2012, and were then presented with a cheque for $15,000 for KIDShine.  At left is the cheque being presented by Oceanbridge owners Bill and Lyndsay Speedy (at far left and far right) to Shine's Joanne Hand and KIDshine Coordinator Donna Williamson.

Thank you Oceanbridge!!!

Jude MacLachlan

From the Shine Team (some of us pictured below at right) to Jude (pictured at left):

What would we do without you?!!! Thank you Jude for everything you have done and are doing to support Shine!

Jude is the ultimate Shine Hero! Jude volunteers many hours of her time every week to raise money and resources to support the work of Shine. From her desk at Shine's office, Jude makes phone calls and writes emails to garner support for Shine's work. Besides helping to organise fundraising events for Shine, she spends a lot of time cold calling individuals and businesses to request donations to Shine, with a massive success rate. She is a bundle of enthusiasm, a barrel of laughs, and an amazing Hero.  She also serves on the Shine Foundation Board.

Jude explains why she volunteers for Shine:

“I was raised with an attitude of giving. I believe that a fulfilled and happy life can only be achieved by letting go of superficial rewards and dedicating oneself to the service of others. I am very lucky because my husband encourages and supports my decision to work as a volunteer as opposed to being in paid employment. In this way it is a family commitment. There are thousands of volunteers who work many hours a week doing invisible jobs for the ultimate reward: personal satisfaction. I get much more from my involvement with Shine than I could ever give back.”

Esther and John Bruning

Esther and John Bruning opened a baby gear stored called “Hatch” in the Eastridge Shopping Centre at the beginning of 2011. Several years before that, they had dreamed of starting a business that could donate profits to a child abuse organisation. That dream has now become a reality.

In the first few months of the store opening, they donated 25% of the gross profits from their business to help fund KIDshine. They hope to increase this donation as the store becomes more successful. Mr. and Mrs. Bruning hope to make a difference in people's lives. They also hope that what they're doing will inspire other businesses to donate products to domestic violence organisations like Shine and KIDshine.

Their extremely generous donation to KIDshine was highlighted in an article in the East & Bays Courier in April 2011 by Sarah Moyes, which included this photo of the Brunings with KIDshine Coordinator Donna Williamson.

Time Out for Women Team

Shine was chosen as the Service Project for the Time Out for Women 2011 Tour.  Approximately 1500 women came to this event in Auckland at the Aotea Centre on 30 July 2011, and contributed to the 18 boxes of 'possibility packs' put together to support and pamper Shine Safe House clients.  The Time Out for Women website explains a bit more about this event.

Max Blackwell, Lily Evan-Adams, Jessica Suo, Tina Chen-Xu and Ben Dring (Zeal Wellington)

On the 3rd of June 2011, as part of a small intern group at Zeal Wellington (that does event management), Max Blackwell, Lily Evan-Adams, Jessica Suo, Tina Chen-Xu and Ben Dring organised an acoustic show in Wellington that raised $285 for Shine, and helped to raise awareness about the work we do. The show was based around a cafe theme with coffee, hot chocolate and food served.  Tables were spread out with a star of Shine brochures and a candle in the middle, plus couches spread out around the stage. Food was sponsored by Wagamama and the Free Store and the coffee beans were sponsored by Supreme. Manning the coffee machines were local baristas that had just finished the Zeal Barista course and seven local artists played at the event: Ash Graham, Anthony Young, Meghan Glue, Lukas Jury, Bradley Garner, Ciaran O'Brien and Kelly Harrison. More than 80 people came and the room was packed. The music was awesome and the atmosphere was great. And after paying for the venue a total of $285 was raised for the Shine.  A BIG thanks to Max, Lily, Jessica, Tina, and Ben!!!

Greg and Debbie Cook

Greg and Debbie raised $1,300 by hosting a Royal Wedding fundraising party during the airing of Prince William and Kate Middelton's marriage ceremony.  The Cook's party was unique in that they were actually celebrating their own 37th wedding anniversary:

"I couldn't believe our luck when all three bridesmaids, best man, groomsmen and ushers, with their partners, were all able to attend.  Toasts were made to the wedding party of 37 years ago and to the Royal one on TV.  Tributes were also paid to my darling mother who passed away in December 2010 and who was an ardent royalist - she would have loved to see us all using her silver and crystal to recreate the wedding table.  We all had a happy and hilarious night which included a major competition for the control of the TV remote to find the score of the basketball game in between the guests arriving at the Abbey.  Everyone was most generous in their support - all agreeing that it gave us a great excuse to celebrate love and marriage and help Shine."   Debbie Cook

Kesea Denhardt

Kesea raised money for Shine by hosting her own creative online fundraiser. She started by asking her friends if they had any pulling power at their workplaces to donate some items that she could put in a raffle. She received a huge amount of support, with items donated ranging from Villa Maria and Stones wines to sets of items from Schwarzkopf products and Bunnings hardware (one of the Bunnings sets is pictured at right). She also organised an auction for Sam Mothersole Photography. She then started a Facebook ‘event’ page, added photos and descriptions of the prizes, and invited everyone in her contacts list to donate and enter the draw to win one of the raffle prizes or enter the auction, and asked everyone to invite their friends and colleagues to donate/enter as well. On the last day, she drew and announced the raffle and auction winners. Finally, she sent thank you emails to everyone who donated items. The event raised a grand total of $781 for Shine.

Sheila Street

Sheila kindly baked cookies and cakes which she sold to her co-workers as a fundraiser for Shine. Sheila’s efforts earned a whopping $600 for Shine.  Her energy and initiative are an inspiration!

Grant Brett & Cowboys Bar

Grant Brett took the initiative to organise the Ride Against Violence, in which bikers from all over Auckland participated to raise nearly $2500 for KIDshine.  Cowboys Bar was the event's primary sponsor. The Ride began at North Harbour Stadium carpark at 12 noon. Bikers then stopped at the Irish Bar, Drury at 12:30 p.m. and again at the Cowboys Bar, The Viaduct, at 3:00 p.m. A big THANK-YOU to the volunteers who collected donations at both stops.
