Our People

Patron: Dame Silvia Cartwright PCNZM, DBE, QSO

We continue to be greatly honoured by the kind patronage of Dame Silvia Cartwright, who has been the patron of Shine for more than 10 years.

In 1989 she became the first female Chief District Court Judge, and in 1993 she was the first woman to be appointed to the High Court. In 2001, she was appointed Governor General. She has always been a strong supporter of rights for victims of domestic violence and used her role as Governor General to further this important cause.

Executive Director: Jane Drumm

Jane Drumm has been the Executive Director of Shine since 1998 – eight years after Shine was founded and when Shine had only four staff and a budget of $180,000. Under Jane’s leadership, Shine has since grown to a national organisation with more than thirty staff and a budget of more than $3 million.

Jane has always been keen to research and trial new ideas in order to find the most effective ways to stop domestic abuse in New Zealand. She has undertaken two major overseas study trips to look at what is working to stop domestic abuse in North America and in the United Kingdom. Her study trip to the UK was under a Winston Churchill Fellowship. Using what she learned overseas, Jane has initiated a number of Shine’s innovative and unique services, including KIDshine (formerly Child Crisis Team), the safe@home programme, and Shine’s hospital advocacy in partnership with Auckland District Health Board (several years before the Ministry of Health issued its Family Violence Intervention Guidelines for District Health Boards).

Previously, Jane worked as a Victim Advisor for Auckland District Court for one year and as a Probation Officer for thirteen years.
