Home is meant to be a place where we can feel safe, comfortable and loved. It is normal for people in relationships to disagree sometimes, but it’s important to know the difference between arguing and behaviour that is abusive.
If you don't feel safe at home, or if you are worried that one of your parents might hurt the other one, or might hurt you, it’s likely that something is wrong. It’s important to remember that you are not to blame for what’s going on in your home or family, and to know that there are people out there who can help make things better for you.
Everyone should feel safe in their own home, and all kids should feel loved by their parents or caregivers.
In an emergency, please ring the Police on 111 for immediate help.
You can always ring the Shine Helpline on 0508 744 633 to talk about what’s going on. This is a free call from your cell phone or any landline 7:30am - 11pm weekdays and 9am – 11pm weekends. You don't have to tell us anything you don't want to, and you don't even have to tell us who you are or your real name.
You might also want to try the What’s Up phone counselling service for 5-18 year olds: 0800 942 8787, from noon – midnight.
This is a new space in our website, and we will be adding to it as time goes on, so that kids, children, and young people can have good and easy to read information about domestic abuse.
