Behind The Scenes Award Winners

Congratulations to the winners of Behind the Scenes!

The Behind the Scenes competition encouraged young people aged 17 – 24 to create a YouTube video based on violence between young people in partnerships.

The top 5 videos were outstanding and considerable talent shone through.

 

1st Prize was awarded to Fiona Young for 'Her World'

The judges commented that 'Her World' busted the myth that violence only happens to certain sorts of young women and the representation of violence was recognised without its explicit use. The involvement of friends in this production also demonstrated the young woman's great courage in the face of punishment for maintianing contact with her friends  and that friends are a source of support.  

 

2nd Prize was awarded to Hannah Spierer for 'A Mugs Game'

Destroying the myths that women like being in violent relationships. 'A Mugs Game' captured the power and control issues surrounding women in such relationships and reflected on the gender values, societal attitudes and beliefs employed by men who use violence.

Shine* is warning New Zealanders that the country’s high rate of domestic violence will only fall when everyone adopts a zero tolerance to the problem.

The organisation, New Zealand’s largest not-for-profit group dedicated to keeping people safe in their own homes, hosted a forum in Auckland this morning to discuss the critical issue of domestic violence.

11 January 2008 Sophie Elliott Murder: A Reminder that DV can happen to anyone

This week’s murder of Sophie Elliott is a strong reminder that perpetrators and victims of domestic violence come from all walks of life. Sophie was a pakeha, educated, middle-class woman who, it seems, had everything going for her.

The other important reminder that Sophie's murder brings home is that we all, as a community, need to be vigilant for warning signs and do our part to keep (potential) victims safe.
